The Bob Ross fans in Year 9 and 10 Visual Arts have been unwinding from a hard term with some landscape painting.
After their exam on Monet, Visual Arts teacher Jackie Cunial decided to ease the class into the holidays with a unit on painting landscapes. Ms Cunial walked the students through some popular techniques for capturing sweeping vistas like dry brushing, fan brushes, palette knives, glazing, blending and sgraffito before challenging the students to create their own landscapes.
The students were then tasked with using three of these techniques in their own paintings. Their works were modelled off scenes they had found online and were painted on canvas using acrylic paints.
The class also drew inspiration from Monet’s Water Lillies series, employing techniques like broken colour. They also explored the way Indigenous artists imbue their landscapes with meaning, employing topological and mythical imagery in their work.
“It was a nice way to end the year,” explains Ms Cunial, “The kids had to consider how to recreate the image through layering colours. They really enjoyed the assignment.”
