On Friday our open boys competed against teams across the region in Wagga. Their performance saw them progress through to the next round of the University Shield.
The first match of the day saw Mt Austin dominate Tumut. Griffith were then paired up with Mt Austin and managed to hold the line in the first 10 minutes of the half hour round. A few errors from Griffith saw them lose their cool and eventually go down 18 nil to the Wagga Wagga team.
The Griffith boys redeemed themselves against Tumut, beating them 18 nil. The victory was enough to qualify Griffith as the Riverina B side in the University Shield. Mt Austin, however, went on to beat Hennessey Catholic College in the Country Cup competition, which was held against the best public and best private school teams from the day.
Dylan Litchfield is to be commended on his relentless tackling throughout the day. Meli Ranitu was also a huge asset to the team, controlling the play in the backline.
“The team played much better in the second match,” recounts coach Duncan Lovelock, “They controlled the ball much better and were more patient building their plays. We’ve definitely got a lot work to do before the next round.”
Griffith will next be paired up against a Western Sydney team in early Term 3.
