Our Year 7s have been applying their Tetris skills to maths in geometry.
To help them learn about transformations on a plane, Mr Gallagher brought the students blocks and instructions on whether to translate (slide), reflect (flip) or rotate (turn) them. The class had to follow these directions and then check their blocks against the answers on the computer.
“Eventually they’ll be able to visualise these shapes and these operations in their mind,” explains Maths teacher John Gallagher, “But in the meantime, these shapes give them a concrete reference that they can use.”
The class will now move on to study negative numbers.
