As part of the Anniversary of the Apology, Year 7 has been researching the history behind Kevin Rudd’s speech and working through a few activities related to the Stolen Generations and Reconciliation.
Tuesday 13 February marks 16 years since Former Prime Minster Kevin Rudd apologised on behalf of the nation for past laws, policies and practices that have impacted upon Australia’s First Nations Peoples, particularly members of the Stolen Generations.
To commemorate the occasion, the class used their laptops to learn more about the history of Indigenous Australia and some first-hand accounts of the Stolen Generations. They then took the time to write their own letter of apology, emulating the one written by Prime Minister Rudd.
“The apology is a major part of the history of Australia,” explains English teacher Libby Ridgway, “It’s important that everyone is aware of our challenging past so that we can build a better future.”
