MRHS - Griffith Hosts Bandlink

Bandlink 2024

Over the past two days, MRHS Griffith was host to 80 aspiring musicians from across the region for Bandlink.

Bandlink is open to students from Years 3 to 12. The program, run by the Arts Unit, brings some world class talent to regional schools, giving students the opportunity to learn from some of the very best.

“This year we are very excited to have Jackie Shaw come down from Sydney,” exclaims Cheryl Walker, Arts Coordination Officer at the Arts Unit, “Jackie Shaw is a very experienced conductor in Sydney. She works with a lot of school bands and larger ensembles. We’re very lucky to have her conduct and guide our musicians.”

“With Bandlink, we look at a holistic approach to music,” explains Cheryl, “We’re developing the kids’ ability to play music through breath support, stretches, rhythm exercises and reading music.”

“We are also looking to help students with developing their ability to play their own individual instrument. This is where our specialist tutors come in handy. They’re able to guide the students and talk technique.”

“Obviously, the two days culminate in everyone performing together as an ensemble, so they're developing their ability to play in a concert band setting as well.”

Thank you to the Arts Unit for coordinating such a fantastic event for our students. A special thank you should also go to Rhys Thomas and MRHS – Griffith’s own Hannah Lonnergan, whose hard work co-coordinating the two days made the event possible.
