MRHS Celebrates Indigenous Literacy Day

Indigneous Literacy Day

In recognition of Indigenous Literacy Day, our Year 7 students read a selection of First Nations books to kindergarten students from Griffith Public School.

The kindergartners journeyed over during second period to the MRHS – Griffith school library. There, our students walked through a range of books covering everything from Aboriginal celebrities and historical figures to the Stolen Generation to the Dreaming.

“Literacy is freedom,” explains ALEC head teacher and activity coordinator Allison Stewart, “It’s important for every child to be able to read and it’s a bonus if they are sharing Indigenous stories.”

Indigenous Literacy Day is presented by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. It is held every year on Wednesday 4 September. Our celebration, however, had to be postponed to avoid a clash with our NAIDOC event.
