Our Year 8s have been making use of the brand-new metalwork room by creating their own rings.
The Jewellery Making class have been tasked with making three rings over the course of the term. Their first ring was a plain sterling silver ring, which was followed by a slightly more ornate ring with entwined silver wires. Their third and final ring will see them use all of the skills they’ve accumulated to make a ring of their own design.
Some of the skills the students have picked up through the exercise are cutting, soldering, annealing measuring, filing, sanding and polishing. It is the first class to be taught in the new metalwork room and the first time Jewellery Making has been taught at the school in the past five years.
“It is exciting to be able to offer more variety in the curriculum,” explains Jewellery Making teacher Jessica Wainwright, “Our students have really taken to learning these traditional skills quickly and have made the most of our state-of-the-art facility.”
The class will move onto creating a necklace pendant of their own design upon completing their rings.
