Year 8 Visual Arts channelled the work of renowned sculptor Oldenberg for their 3D art unit last term.
“We looked at Claes Oldenberg who recreates everyday items on a bigger scale,” explains Art teached Jessica Aramini, “So the project brief was to create a food item significantly larger than its real-life counterpart.”
The class made everything from fruit to pizza to cake. They used carboard, card stock and balloons to give their pieces structure before then using papier-mâché and paint to finish them off. The students worked with a traditional blend of flour and water to apply the paper to their creations as opposed to the more modern PVA glue.
“Papier-mâché is a great introduction to sculpture, scale and perspective,” Miss Aramini continues, “It was messy, but that’s a big part of why the kids enjoyed it as much as they did.”
