Last Thursday our Year 9 Elective Geography class travelled to the Riverina Environmental Education Centre in Wagga Wagga for a day of fieldwork.
The class have been learning about the geographical processes that shape and transform the Earth’s surface. Working in small groups, they had to navigate the bushland using topographical instruments and select sites to conduct testing.
The class examined the colour, texture, pH and salinity of their site’s soil. They then conducted hydrological testing, focusing on turbidity, pH, ammonia and phosphate levels.
While performing their soil tests, the class also got to see a bit of the wildlife. Using telescopic cameras they were able to spot squirrel glider nests, a species native to the area.
“The students were very engaged throughout the day and everyone participated,” recounts Geography teacher Caprice Skinner, “It was great to see the whole class getting their hands dirty and working together to develop their geography fieldwork skills.”
The principal of the Riverina Environmental Education Centre Mr Darron Watt was very pleased with the whole group and commended them on their participation throughout the day.
