Year 8 Science Open Their Hearts

Year 8 Hearts

Last term the amateur cardiologists in Year 8 Science dissected lamb’s hearts to better understand the organ.

The class had to literally open their hearts and identify the ventricles, atriums, aorta, pulmonary artery and various valves. The activity helped the class better understand the organ and its function in the circulatory system.

The dissection was part of the classes Human Machine Unit which explores the various systems in the body and the way that they interact. After examining the respiratory, digestive, excretory, muscular and skeletal system they then created presentations on how these systems work together to survive in the extremes of space and deep underwater.

“A dissection is good hands-on learning,” explains Science teacher Julia Boardman, “It lets the kdis experience the thickness of the muscle wall and to see the structure first hand.”

“For some of the students,” Mrs Boardman adds, “An exercise like this might be the first step toward a career in health and medicine.”

The class will move on to study energy and electricity in their physics unit this term.
