Today, MRHS – Griffith held their NAIDOC celebration with the help of local artists and representatives from the Aboriginal community.
After being greeted by dancers and digeridoo players, students got to speak to Karissa and Sonia Undy and Allan McKenzie Snr about their art and were able to have a yarn with members of the Aboriginal community about what NAIDOC means to them. They also got to hear about traditional weaving from ALEC representatives Kerrilee Philp and Minata Misi. Outside, they were able to partake in some spear and boomerang throwing with Matt Daniels and play traditional Aboriginal games with the Griffith Clontarf Academy.
“The students were able to come through at their own pace and be immersed in the activities,” explains Allison Stewart, “It was very hands on this year.”
“I hope that students that are walking the NAIDOC path today,” explains Nikki Hardie, “Come away with a bit more understanding of our community’s rich Aboriginal history.”
Thank you to the ALEC and all our volunteers from the community for putting on such a special day for our students!
