Though not traditionally a strong soccer school, MRHS – Griffith did an outstanding job fending off their crosstown rivals at Wade on Wednesday.
Griffith were certainly the underdogs at the Griffith Vs Wade Soccer match, with our boys still reeling from a post demerger soccer thrashing last year. To add to the list of setbacks, the Griffith team coach had to be switched out at the last minute and key player Ashmin Sharma was sidelined after damaging a ligament on the weekend.
Our boys managed to withstand the initial onslaught from Wade with Captain Aaron Dawson leading the defence by example. He was aided in no small part by defender Ben Williment who showed no signs of losing his skill since last playing in the Under 12s. Tim Davies, new to the world of goal keeping, proved to be a quick study, making several crucial stops at critical moments in the game and keeping Griffith in the game.
Despite Wade taking an early lead with two goals and a penalty, the boys refused to back down. Our Griffith boys returned from halftime with a renewed determination. James Snow Currey’s first goal unveiled a chink in Wade’s armour and ignited a surge of momentum.
The relentless pressure wound up with Wade accidentally scoring an own goal, narrowing the score to 3-2. The teams battled on through the summer heat with Wade ultimately securing their victory with one final goal.
“The team showed remarkable fighting spirit,” recalls substitute coach Bethany Tyson, “And despite the odds and their lack of experience, they made up for it with sheer willpower and never gave up. That's what makes our students so special on the sporting field—they give everything they have, no matter the challenge.’
Congratulations to Wade as they progress to the next stage, and a huge commendation to our team for their outstanding effort and fighting spirit!
