The Soroptimists honoured Griffith student Madisyn Sarkis at their annual Women’s Day Breakfast today.
The breakfast is traditionally one of the most sought-after events in town. This morning we had our student leadership team, Jiya Brahmabhatt, several staff and of course Madisyn in attendance.
Madisyn received the Soroptimist Award for Citizenship and Leadership. The award recognises a female student who has shown support for equality, human rights, and understanding in the broader community. Anyone who knows Madisyn will no doubt agree that she is a well deserving recipient.
The star of the day, however, was special guest speaker Leila McDougal who managed to captivate the audience with stories about her journey from a sheep station in Walcha into the world of fashion and film making.
Notably, Leila recently completed her film Just a Farmer on a budget of 1.7 million. The film explores the unspoken realities of rural life focusing on mental health and the critical contributions of farming families to the Australian economy.
The breakfast was a great opportunity to celebrate and reflect on what it means to be a woman in 2025. Thank you to the hardworking Soroptimist Griffith branch for once again putting together this special event.
