Year 7 Excavate Choc Chip Cookies

Cookie Archaeology

Earlier this term, our Year 7 History students got to do some hands-on archaeology with cookies and toothpicks as an introduction to the subject.

The class were challenged to remove the chocolate chips from the cookies to emulate the real-life troubles archaeologists face when uncovering artifacts from sites. The class had to ensure minimal damage to either the cookies or the choc chips while performing the task.

“The ‘Choc Chip Archaeology’ activity is a fun and educational way to teach students about the process of archaeology,” explains HSIE teacher Andrew Carruthers, “It highlights the careful methods used by archaeologists to excavate and study artifacts.”

The class will continue to study the methods archaeologists use to discover and excavate sites throughout the term.
