Griffith Just Miss Out On Progressing in Buckley Shield

Buckley Shield First Round

Last Thursday on Leeton’s Number One Oval our MRHS - Griffith under 14s fought schools from across the zone for an opportunity to progress to the next round of the Buckley Shield.

The first round of the day was played against Yanco Ag. The recently formed Griffith team were clearly working through some teething issues with the team getting off to a shaky start. Yanco ended up besting them 16 – 6 with Tevita Misi the only player to land a try in the match.

The team revised their strategy for the second match against age old rivals Wade by creating depth to their attack. The new approach paid off. The match got off to a great start with the Griffith boys leading 18 nil before half time.

A lapse in concentration let Wade back into the game minutes before the half time siren. This lead to a contentious start to the second half. Griffith prevailed in the end, winning 26 – 16.

Jarvarus Tuialii made some great breaks in the second as did Robert Simpson-Murray. Both players were also instrumental in setting up tries for their teammates.

Despite their victory, Wade went on to win the day after a victory against Yanco Ag. It’s fair to say, however, all teams were evenly matched on the day.

“It was a good day,” recounts coach Matt Ruming, “We hope the boys take the feedback and can continue to develop as a team in the coming seasons.”
