Today, MRHS – Griffith held their NAIDOC Week celebration with the help of local artists and representatives from the Aboriginal community.
After being greeted by dancers, students got to speak to Carolyn Williams about her art and were able to yarn with members of the Aboriginal community Damian Thorne, Madison Penrith and Elder Keith Williams about growing up Aboriginal in Australia and the importance of NAIDOC Week.
They then learned about the various medicinal and practical uses of native flora from Stephen Johnson and got a feed of kangaroo curries and damper from the AMS Youth Services. Outside, Matt Daniels taught the kids some traditional Aboriginal games.
“The students got a lot out of meeting Aboriginal people from the local community,” explains ALEC Head Teacher Allison Stewart, “It’s one thing to read about the world’s oldest continuous living culture in books and another thing altogether to learn from people who live and breathe it.”
Thank you to all our guests for sharing their culture with our students!
