Year 9 History have been digging into how the World Wars affected and shaped the Griffith community at the Griffith War Memorial Museum.
The class are currently studying Australians at War and were tasked with finding a specific artefact or biography of someone from the Griffith region to complete their assessment.
The volunteers at the museum were fantastic. They aided the young historians in their search and were only too happy to offer their own expertise on everything from international diplomacy in the early 20th century to the nuances of Australian military-issue firearms.
The students were captivated by their tour guides and relished the opportunity to try on the various uniforms of Australian servicemen and women. It’s safe to say that the display really brought the impact of the conflict home.
“The excursion gave the kids a sense of their place in the world,” explains History teacher Taylah Reynolds, “They didn’t expect to find so many local names represented in the museum. I don’t think they realised the impact of these conflicts on the people of Griffith.”
The Australians at War unit will lay the groundwork for the class’s study of the Vietnam War and the Holocaust in Year 10. Thank you once again to the wonderful volunteers from the Griffith War Museum for accommodating our students.
