On Wednesday, a selection of students from Years 9 and 10 Physical Activities and Sport Studies volunteered for one of football’s most celebrated and beloved jobs: refereeing.
The students spent four hours with Salesi Fatafehi, the South West NRL Coordinator, and Tim Bailey, the NRL Referee Development Officer. They mentored our students through the game’s rules and how to apply them on the field. They also passed on some valuable tips for new referees such as tackling foul play early.
The Year 9 and 10s are being primed for refereeing gigs with the upcoming Mortimer and Barrett Shields. The games are played among primary school students, so it will be a good chance to learn on the job in a relatively low stakes environment.
