After a decidedly slow start to the day, our under 14s girls rugby league team ended up coming out on top at the Rachel Pearson shield on Tuesday.
There were some first game jitters in the newly formed team when they faced off against Yanco. Despite the slow start however, they ended up coming out on top 12 – 4. The team were a little bit more confident when they then took on and beat Hay War Memorial High School 20 – 4 and won the day overall.
Captain Sienna Tamala’s natural ability and understanding of the game was foundational to the team’s success. Bella Kelsey’s experience playing local football was also contributed to the team victory. First timers Cecilia Sua made some formidable tackles and Annalyce Mateo had some swift runs.
“Progress with the girls has been slow but steady,” explains coach Enoka Tia, “But we still have a lot of work to do before we go to Wagga.”
The team will progress through to the next round of the competition in Wagga on 1 July.
