Yesterday, both our under 13s and under 15s rugby league teams competed in the first round of the Country Cup in Jubilee Oval.
The Under 15s played the first match of the day against a surprisingly strong MRHS – Wade team. The boys got off to a good start before Wade opened the scoring. Kingston Sipiki landed a try which was soon matched by Wade in a tit for tat game. Wade ran away with the victory in the second half, ending the match 16 – 6.
The second match of the game saw the under 13s face off against Yanco. The boys struggled to find their footing, and ended up down two tries early in the game. Griffith regrouped, however, and managed to get in front 16 -14. After losing two players halfway through the game, Griffith could no longer hold off Yanco’s onslaught and lost the match 22 – 16.
The third game of the day saw our under 15s face off against Yanco. The teams appeared to be evenly matched. Despite this, Yanco managed make some strong runs and take advantage of some lapses in defence in the last few minutes of the round. They ran away with the game 18 – 8.
The final match of the day was played in good spirits against Marian Catholic College. The game was a clear victory for the boys, who managed to win 18-6. Marian’s sportsmanship, however, is to be commended as they performed incredibly well despite the twelve-person team they pitched.
“Overall it was a good day. The boys did really well considering some of our key players were out,” explains rugby league coach Matt Ruming, “They weren’t happy with the results but they did put in their best effort.”
Special thanks to Enoka Tia and Isaac Piva for their invaluable assistance with the team throughout the day.
