Year 8 Learn About the Digestive System (Graphic Content)

Pig Dissection

Mr Barker and Ms Herin showed their Year 8 the inner workings of a pig last term using organs sourced from a local butcher.

“We start from the snout, run through the oesophagus, down through the stomach and intestines and out through the execratory system,” recounts Stephen Barker, “We also cover the respiratory and circulatory systems.”

Students overwhelmed by the lesson (or from the smell) were free to leave if it all got too much. Notably, however, even the students who left kept coming back to see more.

“An exercise like this is great for our visual learners,” explains Mr Barker, “It also shows how all the systems in the body work together to do their job.”

Year 8 will now move onto study forces in their physics unit.
